Some of my favourite types of photography to capture are editorial studio photoshoots and creative makeup editorials.

So, what is editorial photography? As the term suggests it's often associated with magazines, fashion publications, or online articles with editorial content. It can span from people to architecture, food, culture and more. My subjects however are usually people. Whereas portrait photography focuses on the person, or commercial photography on a product, editorial is more about a story or narrative. Editorial photos can explore a fashion trend, makeup, creative concept or a brand's values through a visual story.
Editorial content can be created both in studio or on location. I love working both ways, but in this article we're looking at studio images.

Makeup & hair
This especially is a type of photography where makeup can play a huge role. In studio we often do sessions with three makeup looks with three lighting setups. Makeup can be part of the vision or story, or the whole shoot can be built around it.

Styling
Styling of course goes hand in hand with makeup and hair. Outfit, jewelry and accessories are selected to compliment the overall look and to tell a story or to create a feeling. Sometimes we work with a stylist or a designer. Just like with makeup the outfit can be the center piece and a shoot built around featuring a line of clothing or jewelry for example. It's not exactly product photography but editorial images can be used for branding purposes just as well.

Lighting
In studio we can basically create any type of light and mood with high powered studio flashes, modifiers, colour gels and in-camera filters. Sometimes it's one just flash, sometimes it's 5+ studio strobes and reflectors. Depending on what is the driving force (makeup, clothing, accessories, narrative) the choice of lighting is selected and built to support that goal. For makeup photos we want to show the vision of the artist and portray the nuances and textures as well as possible. For a story driven shoot more moody or colourful lights can be chosen.
For fashion photos high key images with hard light often work well. Beauty and makeup photos live somewhere between hard and soft light depending on textures and finish. A beauty dish is a classic light modifier to create specular highlights and punchy images. I love to experiment with creative tools as well, like snoots, flags, gobos and optical spots.
